Different Role Same Goal

Different Role Same Goal

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.” – Isaiah 43:19. It’s no surprise that change can be difficult. New transitions come with challenges, but also with benefits. Camp Echoing Hills experienced a change this summer as Sarah transitioned from counselor to activities assistant.

Sarah started working at the camp as a counselor in June 2023. Previously, she was a student at Cedarville and worked in the dining hall. As a counselor, she helped a team of campers with personal care, did activities with them, prayed with them before bed, and gave individual attention to them. As activities assistant, she plans, researches, and executes activities and programs, such as trips, respite weekends, and the sports retreat.

Counselors have more 1:1 interaction with campers, whereas the activities assistant spends time getting to know everyone. This role involves behind-the-scenes work, setting up and tearing down activities. However, Sarah says, “I still get the camp experience – eating, and engaging with campers.” Her favorite part of being a counselor was spending time in the cabins, hanging out, having dance parties, and praying with campers before bed. Her favorite part of being the activities assistant is getting to know everyone, not just the people in her cabins. She explains, “It’s different being in a different role than the other staff and having different stories than everyone else.”

Sarah shares advice for new counselors, “Remember that you’re here for campers, give them the best experience. Remember why you chose camp, and don’t take yourself too seriously – even when you don’t feel like you’re doing enough, the campers see you.” She furthers, be willing to serve wherever the Lord has you for the summer, even in the unexpected.” The Lord works through different positions, each role is working towards the same goal – showing the love of Jesus Christ.

Camp Echoing Hills offers campers unique opportunities and experiences. Our mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ through recreational activities such as axe throwing, archery, side-by-side rides, and crafts. Check out ehvi.org for more information.
