My First Time at Camp

My First Time at Camp
Reflecting on Being a Camp Counselor

Hi, I’m Sarah. Last summer, I was a first-time camp counselor at Camp Echoing Hills. It made such an impression that I now work at camp year-round!
I grew up in Gallipolis, Ohio, and had never heard of Echoing Hills until last year. It was during one of my classes at Cedarville University that I learned about camp from my professor. Having a brother with a disability, I was instantly interested in learning more!

Growing up, my brother participated in programs like Camp Echoing Hills. I witnessed the joy that came with this and knew I wanted to bring that same feeling to others. I had no hesitation in coming. Although I will admit, as I drove closer to camp, I got a little nervous. It hit me – I knew no one there. But, that changed quickly.

Working at camp, you instantly become connected with other team members. You are there to support one another . . . and to have fun together. I met some amazing people last year who have become close friends.

Coming to camp comes with a lot of firsts…and favorites. There are activities (my favorite is color war), the food (sausage gravy and biscuits can’t be beaten), and seeing campers enjoy new things (kangaroo court is the best to witness)! To others considering being a counselor, I would say this. It is easy to think of this as giving up a summer; however, you gain so much. Last year turned out to be one of my favorite summers ever! I loved interacting with the campers and getting to know them personally. When the opportunity came up to work at camp year-long, I jumped on board.

During the “off-season,” I help plan respite weekends, do things around camp that need to be done, and provide care during our traveling adventures. Once summer arrives, I will proudly serve as a counselor again. And I hope you will consider joining me.

Love. Learn. Worship.
