DSP – A Best Friend

Friendship is an enduring affection and intimacy, fostering deep connection. People in a friendship have equal authority with the goal of companionship. Friendship is having mutual respect, not overriding decisions, and transparency. Karen and Loretta have a friendship built on mutual respect, trust, and faith.
Direct Support Professional, Loretta, is described by Karen as a reliable and a “loveable character.” Karen values her personal space; her favorite hobbies are watching television and listening to the radio. Loretta would describe Karen as cheerful and can always count on her to make her laugh. Loretta adores her family, including her grandchildren, and likes caring for her flowers.
Whenever someone new moves into Echoing Hills, Loretta ensures she introduces herself. Meeting on the first day of Karen’s move, about a year ago, and immediately formed a new friendship. Karen’s favorite thing about Echoing Hills is having the freedom to make her own decisions. Loretta’s favorite part of working at Echoing Hills is getting to know the individuals. She believes God called her to this ministry because she lived locally but didn’t know about it at first. When she applied for a job she was hired immediately. Loretta, states, “Echoing Hills is different from other places because of the Christian background and how they treat individuals with dignity.”
Since they met, Karen and Loretta have faced challenges they have worked diligently to overcome. They have worked together on tough tasks such as getting Karen more comfortable with showers and problem-solving with her television. A seemingly random circumstance has transformed into a lasting friendship. With a servant’s heart, Loretta was searching to fulfill her calling. A joyful spirit – Karen wanted to feel loved, encouraged, and supported through a difficult situation. Together they continue to grow closer in trust and faith.
