Respite Weekends
Forty-eight hours of activity-filled fun, respite weekends allow campers to enjoy camp in the off-season. Respites are typically held monthly and are a great way for new campers to experience camp without a full-week commitment. Respite weekends offer a break for families and caregivers of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They are filled with activities, games, and day trips designed to build self-esteem and promote individual growth.
During the weekend, campers and staff go on a day trip. In September, everyone went to the Farm at Walnut Creek. Other activities included in the weekend are archery, fishing, and games connected to the theme. September’s theme was fishers of men, with the games geared around fishing.
Campers who have developmental disabilities, autism, and/or physical disabilities, and are age seven and up, are welcome to register for respites. The number of campers that can attend depends on the number of staff available. At the September respite, there were five staff and twelve campers. When registering, campers are placed on a waitlist and can be approved for the weekend when staffing needs are fulfilled.
Activities Assistant Sarah Thomas states, “Respite programs make campers feel more at home and become familiar with camp.” Respite programs allow campers to experience a piece of summer camp. Volunteers are always welcome and can become staff after attending orientation before camp.
During future respites, campers and staff can expect day trips and fall-themed activities such as pumpkin paintings and hayrides when the weather permits. Sarah explains, “The weekends are a good way to start small and get to know the campers and staff.” With the same caring staff and safe accessible campus, respite weekends are a fun break for everyone involved.
The next upcoming weekend will be October 25-27th. For more information about respites and summer camp, check out Camp Echoing Hills online today!
