Careers in the Field of Developmental Disabilities
ICFs, Waivers, and Adult Day Services Offers Choice and Growth

Despite being some of the most rewarding work out there, many people do not consider careers in the field of developmental disabilities. There are so many opportunities in the industry. Mental health and medical professionals, teachers, direct care support; the list goes on.

When looking at Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs), waiver homes, and adult day service programs, you find powerful, challenging, and incredible jobs. Let’s take a look at some of the opportunities.

Direct Care
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) and those with roles in activities provide front-line support for individuals with disabilities. They work directly with individuals, helping them to lead self-directed lives. Those called to these positions enjoy assisting others in reaching their goals, are often referred to as nurturers, and appreciate the relationships they form.

Nursing
When you ask someone why they went into nursing, you will most likely hear it is to make a difference. Working in the field of developmental disabilities enables people to do just that! Nursing careers allow you to utilize the skills you learned in school while forming meaningful connections with those you provide care for.

Support

Assisting individuals to stay active, healthy, and involved in their communities is the calling for many. And there are positions that allow these individuals to do just that! Drivers assist individuals in getting to jobs, appointments, and other events and activities; housekeeping roles keep homes and laundry clean; positions in dietary make sure food preferences and restrictions are met; and those in maintenance roles help to ensure all parts of individual’s homes are in working order.

Positions such as a Lead Direct Support Professional (DSP), Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional (QIDP), Home Coordinator, Home Manager, and Program Director are ways to grow in your career. These positions allow you to be involved with serving individuals with disabilities while also managing and leading staff members.
